Guest Speaker Betty Busby at the July Membership Meeting

Betty Busby  is  a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, where she majored in ceramics. After RISD, she founded a ceramic tile manufacturing studio in Los Angeles, ran it for 18 years, and sold it to move to New Mexico ( her former ceramic shop is still in business today).

Betty has been working full-time making fiber art and teaching since she moved here to New Mexico in 1994.

She has a full exhibition schedule of quilt and fine art shows both in the US and overseas.
Betty also has had several articles published in magazines, and her work is in half a dozen books.

She constantly experiments with new materials and techniques-many of which can be used in mixed media work as well as quilting.

Betty has planned a short slide show for us, and will bring with her a couple of her quilts and talk about samples of mixed media techniques in her work.

RRAA Member, Peter Smith Exhibiting in Riudoso

Peter Smith will be the Ruidoso Regional Council of the Arts “Artist of the Month” for July 2011. You are invited to visit this exhibit of his work to be held July 2 through July 30 at the Regional Council Office, 1712 Sudderth Drive, Ruidoso, NM. The show is available for viewing Wednesday through Saturday, 10 AM until 3 PM. The Opening Reception will be July 2 from 5 - 7 PM. A seminar will conclude the exhibit on July 30 at 10 AM. Dr. Peter Smith – retired Art Professor University of New Mexico

Peter Smith hopes to see friends and visitors at the exhibit or attending the seminar. The exhibit will consist of a variety of his paintings, including scenes from New Mexico, France, Italy and Wales. Peter looks forward to making new friends at the show.

In Memory of Delma

June 3rd was the 2nd anniversary of Delma Petrullo's passing. When so much has happened since she left, it seems like it's been such a long time ago.
For many of us, her memory is still alive and well. There are some who are new enough to RRAA that they might not have ever known her. But, I do hope they realize that the legacy of RRAA's Founder is alive and well. And growing.
I was going through some image files of RRAA stuff and ran into an image I didn't know I had. It is one of Delma that I took in October of 2008. I thought I would post it here since it's a very auspicious date (or close enough anyway). It really sums up in one nano second the essence of Delma!

Delma, you are missed dearly, but the memory of you lives strong in many of us!

CONFESSIONS OF A STUDIO PAINTER...studio tips and tricks!

The speaker for our next membership meeting on Monday evening, June 13th, will be Hank Schuyler, artist. Hank will be talking about organizing your studio to your very best advantage!! I call Hank the artist with a brain!!! He is incredible!!...a walking encyclopedia of information!! ...and he's a nice guy too!!!!! Truly, he is a dynamic thinker...and he has so much great information to share with us about STUFF!!! ...tips and tricks in organizing your studio so that it works for you!! Regardless of the space you have available, Hank says there are ways to help make your studio enhance your work!!

Hank hails from the East coast...he was captivated by the New Mexican sunlight and varied geography, and after retirement he turned his energies to painting! He has studied with many notable local artists such as Jakki Kouffman, Nance McManus, Deborah Secor, Kathleen Schallock, Fred Miller and Ming Franz...

Hank's largest live audience presentation had 1200 in attendance!! ...so he has had some experience with sharing his interests with others!!

The public is welcome to attend...Destiny Center, 4401 Northern Blvd. NE, Rio Rancho, NM. The business meeting starts at 6:30pm with the speaker directly after...refreshments will be served...please join us!!!

Fundraiser for Common Grounds: A Park Above

Imagine a park with kids of all abilities playing together building healthy relationships. Imagine a park with fun activities that are finally accessible to those who could not access them before. Seeing the vision of this park is easy, because it’s already been done. The pictures you see are from the original Common Ground Park in Lakeland, Florida. We just need to duplicate it with some changes to fit our community.
To make this happen we have a partnership of the City, State, local business, and lots of support from the community. We will make new friends, learn all about the needs of the various disabilities, have a lot of fun, and it will be an accomplishment we can all be proud of.
Please join us today, and work with us as we make history, building the first Common Ground Park in New Mexico, right here in Rio Rancho.
As Mayor Swisstack says, it takes a village, and that is what we will do, build this incredible park though a community effort, business support and community pride.

As a part of their Community Outreach, Rio Rancho Art Association (RRAA) set up a couple of booths at the fundraiser event for A Park Above held at Haynes Park in Rio Rancho, NM. Volunteer members provided art supplies and a bit of mentoring for any of the youth from the community who wanted to create a work of art to take home.
